Motorhome Electrical Autonomy: How to Calculate Batteries and Solar Panels

A practical step-by-step guide to sizing the electrical installation of a camper or motorhome, distinguishing between the starter and auxiliary batteries, and explaining how to estimate the real consumption of onboard appliances.

Key points

To achieve electrical autonomy in your motorhome without relying on the grid, you must separate the starter battery from the auxiliary service battery and understand their real capacity in Ah. By calculating the daily consumption of each appliance in watt-hours, you can estimate the required solar panel size and battery capacity for your trips.

1. Difference between starter and auxiliary service batteries

In a motorhome, the starter battery (or engine battery) powers the electric motor or the vehicle's starting system. Its capacity is usually measured in ampere-hours (Ah) at 12 V and is designed to deliver high currents for short periods.

The auxiliary service battery supplies energy to appliances, lights, the refrigerator, etc. It is sized according to the total daily consumption and recharged with solar panels or external chargers.

2. Identifying the real capacity of the auxiliary battery

The battery label indicates its nominal capacity (Ah) at 12 V, but the usable value depends on the state of charge and the allowed depth of discharge.

For lithium batteries, it is recommended not to drop below 20% to preserve their lifespan. Therefore, if a battery has 100 Ah, the usable range is approximately 80 Ah.

3. Calculating the daily consumption of appliances

To estimate autonomy, first sum the consumption in watt-hours (Wh) of each device you will use during a day. Typical consumption in a van or motorhome usually ranges between 600 and 1500 Wh per day.

Example of typical moderate consumption:

Typical daily consumption of a motorhome
DevicePower (W)Time (h)Consumption (Wh)
Compression refrigerator1008800
Water pump50150
LED lights10440

  • Compression refrigerator 100 W × 8 h = 800 Wh
  • Water pump 50 W × 1 h = 50 Wh
  • LED lights 10 W × 4 h = 40 Wh
  • Approximate total: 890 Wh per day.

4. Sizing solar panels and charge controller

The recommended total power of the panels usually ranges between 200 W and 400 W for a standard installation.

To calculate the required power, take your daily watt-hours, multiply by 1.5 to cover losses, and divide by the peak sun hours (approx. 4 h).

Example with a consumption of 890 Wh: 890 Wh × 1.5 = 1335 Wh. Dividing by 4 h of peak sun, you get 334 W. This suggests an installation of approximately 350 W, within the usual range of 200-400 W.

5. Common mistakes when sizing the electrical installation

1. Not separating the starter and service batteries.

2. Underestimating nighttime consumption or consumption on cloudy days.

3. Ignoring the recommended depth of discharge for lithium batteries.

6. Recommendations to optimize autonomy on the road

- Use LED lights and turn off devices when not needed.

- Schedule the use of the water pump and refrigerator during hours with higher solar irradiation.

- Consider a higher-capacity lithium battery if you plan long trips without stops.

How long does a 100 Ah battery last with a daily consumption of 890 Wh?

At 12 V, 890 Wh is equivalent to 74.2 Ah (890 ÷ 12). If the battery has an 80% usable range, that is 80 Ah available. Therefore, the battery would cover the full daily consumption, allowing an autonomy of more than one day without recharging.

Can I use a starter battery as an auxiliary battery?

It is not recommended because starter batteries are designed for short high-current bursts, not for prolonged charge/discharge cycles. Using them as an auxiliary battery can shorten their lifespan.
